WNT | Winterization

System overview

The goal of winterization is to remove saturated long-chain plant waxes and fats from valuable extracts. If these materials are not removed, the extract appears cloudy and will have an undesirable taste when heated in a vaporizer.

Aptia Engineering’s WNT Series provides an efficient processing solution for winterizing 5 kg to 75 kg of extract in a single batch, with a total daily capacity of 40-1000(+) kg per day. The WNT processing solution reduces labor requirements, reduces spillage, decreases open-air solvent handling and fire risk, and increases total lab productivity.

1. Incorporation – The WNT system uses heat and agitation to thoroughly mix extract and ethanol into one homogenous solution.

2. Cooling – Chilled heat transfer media and agitation are used to rapidly and evenly cool the bulk solution to low temperatures.

3. Low Temperature Chilling – The solution can be further chilled using liquid nitrogen or a low temperature refrigeration system to ensure the best removal of the fats and waxes.

4. Filtration – The solidified fats and waxes are then easily separated from the refined extract in a filtration system such as the Aptia Dynamic Wafer Filter (DWF).

Aptia provides versatile single reactor systems with extract winterization capacities of up to several hundred kg per day. To meet larger production requirements, Aptia offers multi-reactor systems that are more energy efficient and can process in upwards of 1,000(+) kg per day.
